Definition

An injection of corticosteroid medication into the epidural space surrounding the spinal cord and nerve roots to reduce inflammation and pain from disc herniations, spinal stenosis, or radiculopathy. ESIs require prior authorization through utilization review and are subject to MTUS treatment frequency guidelines.
